Religion and ethics

NSW public schools offer special religious education and special education in ethics, delivered by approved providers wherever available.

During enrolment, you can choose a special religious education option for your child from the school’s available approved providers. You can withdraw your child from special religious education by selecting alternative meaningful activities, or special education in ethics if it’s available.

You can update your preference by writing to the school or through the online form available at participating schools.

Visit the department’s website for more information about religion and ethics.

Religion and ethics at Waitara

It is a requirement that all Department of Education schools provide religious instruction for their students. Parents and caregivers have the right to have their children receive instruction in their preferred religious persuasion, where authorised teachers of that persuasion are available.

Below is the list of approved special religious education programs provided at the school for 2019. Additional details of SRE programs on offer at the school can be obtained from SRE providers. Contact details of SRE program coordinators can be provided by the school if required.

Non-Scripture

In compliance with the updated 2019 Religious Education Policy, students who have indicated that they do not wish to attend SRE are to be provided with supervised alternative meaningful activities. There will be no explicit teaching taking place during this allocated time. Each week, students will be provided with a visual stimulus and will have the opportunity to respond through independent writing, drawing or discussion with others.

On enrolment you will be asked to nominate the special religious education program you wish your child to attend, or indicate that you wish to withdraw your child from special religious education, by completing and returning the attached form. If you do not wish for your child to attend scripture, they will participate in alternative meaningful activities.

At any time, you have the right to change your SRE nomination or to withdraw your child from the nominated lessons. A note to your child’s teacher will affect this change.
